Our history

In 1857, Kährs was founded in Nybro, where Johan Kähr Sr. opened a shop crafting wooden utility goods.

In 1919, Gustaf Kähr, the founder’s grandson, took over the company, which became an innovative producer of wooden doors, toys, furniture, and flooring, focusing on efficient ways to use sustainable wood materials.

In 1941, Kährs was awarded a patent for inventing the modern engineered hardwood floor — the multilayer floor. This design is still the global standard in all parquet flooring.

In 1958, the first factory-finished floors were produced using methods developed by Kährs. Previously, floors were installed and sanded before being finished on site.

In the 1980s, Kährs begins a global expansion, starting with several markets in Europe, including the Nordic region, as well as the US. In the mid-1990s, Kährs also expands into Eastern European and Asian markets.

In 1984, Kährs is the first flooring manufacturer to move away from using solvent-based lacquers in its production, having initiated an environmental program long before this became common practice.

In 1995, Kährs introduces a new generation of more affordable wood veneer floors using less raw material while still being a real wood floor: Linnea, featuring a thin surface layer of wood, yet still hard, durable and easy to install.

In 1997, Kährs gains the ISO 14001 environmental certification. Waste products from forest felling provide district heating for the community around the factory. The remaining ash is returned to the forest as fertilizer.

In 1999, Kährs introduces the world's first parquet floor with the glueless Woodloc® joint. The technology is seen as revolutionary, making installation easier, quicker, and delivering a perfect result.

In 2009, Kährs launches the next level of the Woodloc® joint system – Woodloc® 5S. These new joints make installation even faster and more flexible, while producing a stronger floor.

In 2012, Kährs & Karelia-Upofloor merge, creating Kährs Group, a world-leading flooring company now offering both residential and commercial flooring targeting healthcare and education with sustainable PVC-free resilient flooring.

In 2013, Kährs introduces a broad range of 2-layer parquet flooring including various herringbone patterns.

In 2014, Kährs strengthens its sustainable offer by applying for and receiving the Nordic Swan Ecolabel for the first time on its wood floors. Today, Kährs offers more than 200 floors certified with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and has continued to certify their floors with relevant and strict ecolabels globally and locally.

In 2019, Kährs expands its flooring solutions to also include Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT). Using their knowledge of wood material, designs were developed that mimic the natural variation of wood along with features such as waterproofing, dent and wear resistance in a durable, well-designed LVT flooring solution for the home.

In 2021, Kährs Life Essential is launched, introducing a new generation of durable real wood flooring with properties similar to those of resilient vinyl flooring, combining the best of both worlds where the beauty of wood meets the practical features of a vinyl floor.

In 2022, Kährs introduces two new flooring solutions, both carrying the Nordic Eco-label: Kährs Zero & Green, a PVC-free plastic flooring made from both recycled and bio-based materials, and Kährs Aware, made from recycled fibers from the textile industry, with the appearance and durability of a wood floor.

In 2023, Kährs forms a five-year partnership in the cutting-edge field of Neurodesign to better understand how room design and materials support healing, learning, and creativity. Kährs will use this new knowledge in future floor innovations and product development to promote health, performance, and well-being.

In 2023, Kährs launches a take-back program that enables the recycling of installation waste from Kährs Zero flooring. This program allows the waste to be recovered and turned into new flooring products.

In 2024, Kährs unveils the Estate collection – the first high-quality wood flooring collection to be produced in the U.S. based on knowledge built within Kährs over generations.

In 2025, Kährs Infinity is launched to complement Kährs PVC-free plastic flooring offer. Kährs Infinity contains up to 60–90% recycled content, and as a more affordable alternative to Kährs Zero, it delivers high performance in commercial spaces in Healthcare and Education, second only to the performance of Kährs Zero.
